Pterygium axillae as a rare manifestation of Poland syndrome
2016
Abstract Poland syndrome is characterized by a combination of absent pectoralis muscle, abnormalities of the rib cage, the breast, as well as brachy-syndactyly. We report a case of a 3 month old girl who was born with right sided axillary pterygium combined with flattening of the right anterior chest wall. Resection of a sclerotic band with reconstruction by Z-plasty was performed. Intraoperative and histopathological findings confirmed that the axillary pterygium developed on the basis of a scarred, hypoplastic pectoralis major muscle. Our case adds to the body of evidence that Poland syndrome may present in a heterogeneous fashion, including the rare finding of axillary pterygium with ass…
Gynecomastia
2020
Gynecomastia is a swelling of the male breast as a result of the growth of two components: The adipose and the glandular tissue, sometimes unilateral, but more often occurring in bilateral form. Several classification systems were proposed, based on the hypertrophy of the tissue and the position of the nipple-areola complex. The clinical examination and blood analysis play an important role in excluding endocrine tumors or hormone balance modification and in choosing the treatment. The management of gynecomastia considers the drug therapy in case of hormones disorder. But surgical procedures, such as the combined adenectomy/liposuction, represent the gold standard of treatment. Skin redunda…
Poland’s Syndrome
2020
Poland’s syndrome is a sporadic, congenital thoracic deformity, mostly unilateral, with a wide spectrum of presentation. The thoracic malformations are distinguished on the basis of the anatomical site in which an embryological development alteration has occurred after the fourth week of gestation (Table 3.1) [1]. Poland’s syndrome is a rare congenital and complex anomaly of the development of thoracic muscles, characterized by hypoplasia of the breast and nipple, scarcity of subcutaneous tissue, absence of the costosternal portion of the pectoralis major muscle, lack of the pectoralis minor muscle, aplasia or deformity of the costal cartilages or ribs II to IV or III to V, alopecia of the …
